Toruk – The First Flight

If you thought the wildly popular Blue Man Group had the monopoly on blue-themed theatrical experiences, then think again. Manila is getting into a brilliantly blue mood with an entertaining new Canadian circus spectacle which takes its cue from a smash-hit American sci-fi film.

Toruk
– The First Flight, Cirque du Soleil’s first film-influenced show, was inspired by the visually magical 2009 movie Avatar and created in collaboration with its director James Cameron. Expect colourful cobalt plumage and jaw-dropping costumery combined with mesmerising sets as this production arrives at the Mall of Asia Arena, with performances from 23 June.

The original story tells the tale of a paraplegic marine dispatched to the moon Pandora, who becomes torn between following orders and protecting the blue alien-tribal world where the Na’vi live in harmony with nature. The live stage-adaptation prequel ‘envisions a world beyond imagination thousands of years before the events depicted in the film’, sharing two hunters’ epic quest to tame the most fearsome predator in Pandora’s skies, Toruk. On the way, the childhood friends have to gather five talismans.

Alongside a Director of Creation (Neilson Vignola), the show draws on the work of two fab choreographers, offering breathtaking sets, high-octane acrobatic and aerial stunts, powerful puppets, dreamy lighting and hypnotic mood music. Its multimedia directors/writers, Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon, will transport you to a mythical new frontier. Happy travels…
