A Guy’s Guide to Shanghai

We all know this space-age super city moves at lightning speed, but dudes who love life in the fast lane will be truly spoilt this month, as the Ferrari exhibition has sped into town. Here’s how to make a day out of it...

What better way to prep for the day ahead than with a cheeky pamper session at The Peninsula Spa Kick off your morning with a swoony treatment from the dedicated men's menu, which includes everything from Chinese meridian massages, foot reflexology, illuminating facials to have you looking and feeling tip-top.

Freshened up, it’s time to sink your teeth into Shanghai’s myriad cultural offerings. Revheads should zoom straight to the Shanghai Auto Museum. The first of its kind in the country, you’ll find everything from the 50s Red Flag CA72, China’s first-gen motor, to classic wheels from the stables of Rolls-Royce, Porsche and Maserati. If you missed out on the Ferrari Racing Days earlier this year, you have a few days left catch Ferrari: 70 Years of High-Powered Glory (runs until 31 Aug, 2017).

As part of the showcase, you’ll have the chance to admire 14 iconic vehicles including the mighty 195 Inter, a Grand Tourer rendition of the 195 S that was launched in 1950; the enduringly popular 330GT2+2 series II and the highly sought after Dino 246 GT, which continued to pull in high demand long after production ceased. Also on display is a new limited-edition series, including the Testarossa which debuted in 1984, the front-engined V12 550 Maranello and the recently unveiled LaFerrari Aperta launched to mark the brand’s notable 70th anniversary.

By now you must have worked up quite the appetite, so zip back into town to your pre-booked table at The Cannery for a late-lunch. This glowing, amber-lit and copper-ceilinged diner serves up flip-fresh Canadian West Coast seafood (the oysters and lobster are tops), paired perfectly with your choice of craft cocktails, beer, bourbon or whisky.

Still got a little more fuel left in the tank? As the sun sets and the city switches into another gear,  there’s no better way to enjoy the evening than from the sidecar of a purring Chang Jiang 750 motorcycle. Pro guides Shanghai Insiders run exhilarating tailormade tours of new and old Shanghai; the one-hour ‘Catchy Ride’ is fab for a teaser; the two-hour ‘Inside Ride’ will whisk you through a maze of old lanes, while the four-hour long ‘Mighty Ride’ will give you a taste of yesteryear and hidden Art Deco villas. Vroom, vroom...
