Music in the Summer Air Festival
It’s summer and there’s something in the air… The 8th Music in the Summer Air Festival, to be precise. Running from 2 to 15 July, this feelgood, cross-genre celebration attracts devotees of classical to more contemporary sounds, with music-lovers flocking to hear jazz, latin, folk, country and even pop at this seasonal spectacle, an oasis of music for everyone in the city.
This year’s MISA bash kicks off with an opening gala by the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Alan Gilbert, who also wields the baton for Mahler’s Symphony No. 7. American trumpet maestro Wynton Marsalis teams up with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for more magic. Amadeus Live in Concert will be conducted by Holland’s Ernst van Thiel. Acclaimed British pianist Christian Blackshaw will perform the complete Mozart Sonatas (I to IV) over four nights. Venues include the architecturally-stunning Shanghai Symphony Hall’s Concert Hall and Chamber Hall.
Local performances span Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Opera House Orchestra, Shanghai Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, and Shanghai Youth Chinese Orchestra, with a flock of talented soloists and conductors.
Out on the Shanghai Urban Music Lawn you can catch quirkier fare from the Baltic Guitar Quartet to the Saxony Brass Player Quintet, and the bound-to-be-popular free concert Titanic Live with Orchestra (so good, it’s on twice…). You can also enjoy local outdoor gigs in parks across town, along with movies, animation and more.
