Cheung Chau Fishballs
Lamma Island

One of the biggest surprises for visitors to Hong Kong is the multitude of islands – more than 250 – dotted around Hong Kong Island and Kowloon peninsula. Escape the city’s density and experience an alternative side to Hong Kong by exploring these three islands: Lamma, Cheung Chau and Lantau, all a quick ferry journey away.

With its long stretches of sand, bohemian community and holiday resort atmos, Lamma is a top choice for a day trip. The island’s ‘town’, Yung Shue Wan, is centred around Main Street which has a plethora of western-style bars and restos (including Carlos for awesome tapas, and live music). Take the scenic family trail to the traditional fishing village, Sok Kwu Wan (about an hour’s gentle walk) and feast on a fresh fish supper at one of the waterfront eateries before catching the ferry back to Hong Kong Island.

Famous for its annual Bun Festival and traditional fishing village vibes, Cheung Chau is also top spot for watersports. The Cheung Chau Windsurfing Centre offers windsurfing, kayaking and stand up paddleboard classes and rentals year round, though all are weather dependent. Before you leave, don’t forget to sample the island’s acclaimed fish balls at the counter next to the pier – you’ll spot it from the queue!

Alongside hosting the airport, the spectacular but touristy Big Buddha and Disneyland, Hong Kong’s largest island Lantau is home to a vast network of hiking and mountain biking trails on and around its two mountains: Lantau Peak and Sunset Peak. Post trek, beeline to Lower Cheung Sha Beach for relaxed eats and drinks at Bather’s, a casual beach side restaurant with uninterrupted views out to the South China Sea. Sitting here with the sand beneath your toes, the feel is  more tropical island than Hong Kong.
